The Gift of Permission -The Power of Self-Permission

Over the past two years, I have spent a significant amount of time exploring the idea of permission when it comes to executing on our life visions. In a society where external approval is often seen as a prerequisite for action, granting ourselves the permission to be fully self-expressed is revolutionary.

From a young age, we are conditioned to seek validation from parents, teachers, friends, and colleagues. We wait for nods of approval, pats on the back, and words of encouragement before we dare to step forward and we carry this with us into adulthood. But what if we realized that the true source of permission lies within us? Giving yourself permission to be bold enough to push your vision into the world is indeed revolutionary act of self-love.

Permitting ourselves to pursue our desires is often hindered by the need for external approval. Many of us operate from a people-pleasing mentality, seeking validation before opening up. I’m definitely guilty of holding numerous ambitions without ever acting on them due to this mindset. It’s challenging to be vulnerable and put yourself out there without addressing the need for external validation.

I love books and have always read a lot. I began writing 20 years ago to heal after losing my closest cousin, which helped me hone my writing skills and appreciate “on paper” self-expression. For years, I wanted to share my writing, believing it could help others who were grieving, but I held back, feeling I lacked the authority to do so. Many times in my life, I waited for external permission instead of giving it to myself.

The Power of Self-Permission

When we rely on others for permission, we inadvertently give away our power. We allow other people’s opinions and judgments to dictate our choices and shape our lives. This dependency leads to a constant state of hesitation and self-doubt. However, by reclaiming our power and granting ourselves permission, we break free from these constraints and open the door to limitless possibilities.

Granting yourself permission is not an overnight transformation; it’s a journey. It begins with self-awareness and a deep understanding of your values and desires. Reflect on what truly matters to you. What dreams have you put on hold? What passions have you suppressed because you were waiting for someone else’s approval? Acknowledge

Practical Steps to Grant Yourself Permission

  1. Affirm Your Worth: Speak to yourself in ways that reinforce your self-worth. Remind yourself that you are capable and deserving of pursuing your goals.
  2. Set Boundaries: Learn to say no to things that don’t serve your purpose or bring you joy. Protect your time and energy by setting clear boundaries.
  3. Embrace Imperfection: Understand that perfection is an illusion. Give yourself permission to make mistakes and learn from them. Growth comes from taking risks and embracing failure as part of the journey.
  4. Celebrate Your Successes: Take time to celebrate your achievements, no matter how small. Acknowledge your progress and give yourself credit for the strides you’ve made.

When you give yourself permission, you transform not only your own life but also the lives of those around you. You become a role model for self-empowerment, inspiring others to break free from the chains of external validation. By living authentically and pursuing your passions, you create a ripple effect that encourages others to do the same.

Remember that the permission you seek is already within you. It’s time to unlock your potential and embrace the freedom to be yourself. Trust in your abilities, honor your desires, and take bold steps toward the life you envision. You are the permission you often seek from others. Embrace it, and watch your life transform in extraordinary ways.
